TUF 23, Episode 6 fight recap

The sixth episode of the Ultimate Fighter 23 aired tonight at 10:00 PM ET on Fox Sports 1 and featured the third men’s fight between Eric Spicely and Elias Urbina.

Round 1 – Spicely takes the center of the octagon and immediately shoots for a single leg takedown. Urbina nearly succumbs to the attempt but sweeps and keeps on top. Spicely tangles him up and quickly locks up an armbar from the bottom but Urbina slams and swings his way free. Spicely grabs the leg in the midst of a scramble and rolls for the heel hook. Urbina stays calm and breaks free before getting in half guard and smashing Spicely’s body with a number of hard elbows. Spicely dives for a leg again, but Urbina limb-legs out of it. Spicely scrambles to the back and begins to dominate from the position. He secures the body triangle and lands multiple punches when working for a rear-naked choke. Urbina absorbs the blows and keeps Spicely from securing his arms around the neck for the final minute of the round.

Round 2 – Urbina defends the first takedown attempt of the round and hammers Spicely to the body with a big kick. He lands the jab and defends another takedown before going upstairs with a kick that’s blocked. Spicely continues to pursue the takedown and finally gets Urbina on his third attempt of the round. He wastes no time taking Urbina’s back again and secures the body triangle. Spicely lands more punches before Urbina rolls over and tries to stand up. Spicely keeps him down and attacks with the rear-naked choke again but Urbina defends. Spicely holds the position for nearly two minutes while throwing punches and working for the submission but can’t get the job done before the end of the round.
