TUF 20, Episode 2 fight recap

The twentieth season of the Ultimate Fighter debuted last week and the second episode aired tonight at 10:00 PM on Fox Sports 1.

No. 2 Joanna Calderwood vs. No. 15 Emily Kagan

Round 1 – The fighters touch gloves. Calderwood opens with a leg kick. She continues and attempts low and high kicks, but she misses on both. Kagan comes back with a body kick. Calderwood connects with another leg kick. Kagan lands a straight right to the chin and then just misses with a big hook. Calderwood continues to land leg kicks. Kagan lands a big straight right, but Calderwood presses forward with kicks to the legs and body. Kagan counters a kick attempt with a big combination. However, Calderwood initiates the clinch and lands a hard knee to the body followed by a punch. She then separates and lands another flush knee to the midsection. Kagan now engages the clinch and presses Calderwood against the cage. Calderwood throws knees to the body and separates, though. Calderwood gets the clinch again and lands multiple knees to Kagan’s face. They break to the center of the cage, and Calderwood lands a body kick before the round comes to an end.

Round 2 – Calderwood opens with a leg kick that is countered by punches from Kagan. Calderwood goes right back to the clinch and works knees and punches to the head and body. Calderwood goes for a takedown that briefly grounds Kagan, but she’s back up. Calderwood continues to pursue the takedown and gets Kagan down into side control. Calderwood traps Kagan’s arm in the crucifix and lands a series of elbows. She attempts to transition to a kimura, but Kagan stands up with Calderwood on her back then slams her to the ground. Calderwood transitions to a reverse triangle choke, but it’s not tight enough to force the submission. Kagan spends close to two minutes stuck in the submission attempt before the round comes to an end.
