The tenth episode of the Ultimate Fighter aired tonight on Fox Sports and featured the second quarter final match between Aislin Daly and Jessica Penne.
No. 4 Jessica Penne vs. No. 5 Aisling Daly
Round 1 – There’s little offense to start the fight. Penne connects with the first significant blow as part of a combination. Daly accidentally pokes Penne in the eye, and referee Herb Dean briefly halts the action. Penne recovers, and the fight resumes. Penne uses the jab to get inside for a body lock. She presses Daly against the cage and attempts a takedown. Daly defends well, but she’s still trapped against the cage eating punches. Daly reverses position and gets clinch control. The position reverses several more times before Penne breaks free. Daly begins to find her range at distance and lands more strikes. Penne initiates the clinch again and fails on another takedown attempt. Penne attempts to pull guard, but Daly has no interest in going to the ground. Penne gets up and tries to clinch, but Daly scores a hip toss and stands back up. Penne pushes forward with punches on the feet and lands a solid hook at the end of the round.
Round 2 – Daly finds a home for her punches to open the round. She’s far more mobile on her feet and peppers Penne with the jab. Penne lands a strike before clinching. She’s unable to take Daly to the ground as they fight against the cage. Daly controls the action and trips Penne to the mat. She doesn’t follow, though, and Penne stands up. Daly initiates the clinch, but Penne breaks free. The volume of strikes jumps on both sides, but Daly decides to clinch. Penne then throws her to the mat and lands in top position. She then passes to mount, but Daly quickly gives up her back. Penne throws punches and attempts to secure a submission, but she can’t finish the fight before the end of the round.
The judges declare the fight a draw, and a sudden-victory round will decide who advances to the semifinal round.
Round 3 – Daly pushes the action on the feet. She gets overly aggressively and walks into a huge takedown from Penne. Daly gives up her back, and Penne looks for a rear-naked choke. She’s too high on the back, so Daly shakes her off and moves into top position. Penne is active from the bottom and attempts a gogoplata and triangle choke, but she can’t secure either. Penne scrambles into half guard and works punches to the body and head. Daly struggles badly to get out from the bottom. Penne dominates position from half guard, side control and mount. Daly eventually scrambles free and gets to her feet with little time remaining. Daly moves forward and attempts a takedown of her own. She briefly grounds Penne, but the round and fight are over.
