Tachi Palace Fights, a top regional promotion, has carved outs its niche as home to some of the world’s top flyweight talent. In fact, notables Ian McCall (current Tachi champ), Darrell Montague (former champ), Jussier da Silva, Mamoru Yamaguchi and Ulysses Gomez (former champ) – who appear on many top-10 lists for the division – made just a combined $33,000 at this past Friday’s event.
That could be good news for the UFC, which soon plans to launch a flyweight division of its own for the first time in history. While initially targeted for a debut before year’s end, UFC president Dana White recently told MMAjunkie.com it could be early 2012 instead. But with the flyweight division’s elite earning what the average UFC preliminary-card fighter does, it could be an inexpensive addition.
In a recent interview, Tachi Palace entertainment coordinator Jeremy Luchau told MMAjunkie.com he knows the UFC may soon poach much of its flyweight talent. But he said he has no problem if that’s the case.
