Three years ago DC named how he lost on Saturday
Daniel Cormier: “Don’t think you’re gonna kick me in the head with your left leg. Do not think you’re gonna kick me with the left foot in the head.”
During a UFC 178 media event on August 5, 2014, then UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones said his team had identified “tendencies” in Daniel Cormier’s game that he would exploit.
“Every fighter has their tendencies,” said Jones when asked to identify Cormier’s weaknesses. “And I’ve been able to pick out some pretty, pretty, pretty good tendencies he has that I will exploit against him. My camp is just pretty solid man, Greg Jackson is a very, very smart trainer. I have really good people in my corner and life that’s gonna help me get through this amazing challenge. I can’t actually go over what his weaknesses are, but we’ve found many tendencies in his game.”
Cormier knew exactly what Jones was referring to.
“I have tendencies, and I know what he’s talking about because they’re glaring,” conceded Cormier.
The pair then bantered back and forth with neither wanting to show his hand.
“I know that there’s one thing that I do that has gotten me in trouble if you want to call it trouble,” said DC. “I haven’t been in much trouble so in the instance that I maybe did get a cut or something, I know it was because of that tendency he is talking about.”
Then Jones referenced the Josh Barnett fight and Cormier acknowledged they were on the same page.
“Don’t think you’re gonna kick me in the head with your left leg,” said Cormier. “Do not think you’re gonna kick me with the left foot in the head.”
Jones agreed they were both discussing the same thing, and referenced UFC president Dana White accusing coach Greg Jackson of killing a UFC event when Cormier pulled out and the coach declined to take a fight vs. a new opponent.
“I wish Greg Jackson was here,” said Jones. “My sport killer. My sport killer will help me out big time right now. No, he has many tendencies but thank you for bringing that one to my attention. Yes, we noticed that.”
Cormier continued.
“Yeah, of course you did, because it’s fricking glaring!” said Cormier. “I understand but that is a weakness that I’m smart enough to understand. Where there is a weakness and I go in and correct it. … It’s ok, it’s fine, I will fix it guys, don’t worry.
And of course on Saturday night Jon Jones landed a left high kick on Daniel Cormier and it was all over but the formalities.
