It might look like a tall order on paper, but Jarred Brooks is in with a real chance of becoming a two-sport, two-weight titleholder in ONE Championship at “ONE Fight Night 13: Allazov vs. Grigorian” on Friday, August 4.

The reigning strawweight mixed martial arts king will venture up to flyweight and over to submission grappling to challenge world champion Mikey Musumeci for the gold live and for free in North American primetime via Prime Video.

Musumeci’s ground skills may be fearsome, but here’s why “The Monkey God” could shock the world.

1. No stranger to a scrap on the mats

Brooks certainly knows how to compete on the canvas.

The American was a state champion wrestler in high school, and he compiled a 35-0 record in his senior season.

His wrestling acumen could hold him in good stead as he scrambles for position with Musumeci. And once on top, Brooks will be a difficult proposition.

The 30-year-old has eight submission finishes among his 20 professional MMA victories, so he isn’t short of knowledge on how to get the job done.

2. Not his first foray at flyweight

Brooks’ confidence will be bolstered by the fact that the weight class he’ll be challenging Musumeci at isn’t foreign territory.

The strawweight MMA king has campaigned at flyweight for most of his career – he has even competed at bantamweight once before.

Most of his success has come at flyweight, too, with only a handful of his wins coming from strawweight bouts.

Alhough ONE fans haven’t seen him compete at 125 pounds, they should expect Brooks to bring a high-paced game to the ring at ONE Fight Night 13.

3. Experience in high-stakes battles

A world title clash on ONE’s global stage will hold no fear for the brash American, as he has shown that he can rise to the occasion before.

His championship heart was on full show when he outlasted longtime strawweight king Joshua Pacio at ONE 164 last December to claim the divisional strap via unanimous decision.

In doing so, Brooks handed “The Passion” his first loss since 2019 and ended his three-and-a-half-year reign.

He also defied the critics that evening, who billed their fight as a “striker vs. grappler” showdown, by outstriking his more fancied opponent to get the win.

So, fans shouldn’t be surprised if “The Monkey God” flips the script at ONE Fight Night 13.
