CM Punk is a former professional wrestler and former WWE champion. But he gave up his career in professional wrestling to pursue a career in professional mixed martial arts.
Have never fought professional or even amateur, Punk (real name Phil Brooks), was signed by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He’s level of fame in professional wrestling was likely a deciding factor with the executive’s at the UFC probably believing he would bring a lot of fans and attention to the organization.
However, they did not want him to just jump into the Octagon. After signing with the UFC more than a year and half ago, Brooks removed to Wisconsin and joined Roufus Sports, home of former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis. With head coach Duke Roufous, Brooks dedicated himself to training all aspects of mixed martial arts full-time, training with top fighters, and competing in ‘smoker’ fights. Basically amateur MMA fights held in the gym.
Although no official announcement has been made, Brooks is supposed to make his UFC debut this year against Mickey Gall, a fighter who earned the privilege when he won a fight on Dana White’s YouTube series ‘Lookin for a Fight’.
The UFC recently had a film crew at Roufus Sport and will next week release a short documentary of Brooks’ journey to the Octagon. Today, they released a trailer of that documentary:
