Former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping lost his title to welterweight G.O.A.T. Georges St-Pierre on November 4, 2017. Just three weeks later he was knocked out badly by Kelvin Gastelum in the main event of UFC Fight Night 122 in Shanghai, on Saturday night.

He was as ever a gentleman in defeat, albeit on his own terms.

UFC commentator Jon Anik noted The Count is “perhaps the most inspirational athlete I have ever met,” and asked Bisping to reflect on what just happened. Rather than toot his own horn, Bisping offered thanks to all, especially his opponent.

I just want to say congratulations to Kelvin Gastelum. Job well done tonight, he said. Thank you all for being here. Hope you all enjoyed it. I was enjoying myself. I was enjoying myself and he caught me with a good shot. God bless Kelvin. He’s young. I’ve been doing this for a long time, man. I’m getting old. I’m getting old. God bless you all for being here. Thank you.

Anik next asked Bisping if he still planned to have one last fight UFC Fight Night 127 at The O2 in London, England, on March 17. Bisping replied with deadpan humor.

You know Kelvin is a great guy, said Bisping. But unfortunately it’s going to take a bigger pile of s*** than him to get rid of me. So ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for being here. Congratulations to Kelvin. My family back home, I love you dearly.

“Sorry I didn’t get it done. All these guys here, this team, everybody in England that supports me, thank you so much. Congratulations to Kelvin. Well done. Well done. Love you all.

“Sorry guys.”

Anik had the right, last word.

“All class,” he said.
