When Nick Diaz tested positive for marijuana metabolites after his UFC 143 loss to Carlos Condit, he was fined by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for 30% of his 200k purse, plus 30% of a 65k bonus.
However, ESPN’s Brett Okamoto is reporting via twitter that NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer told him the 65k bonus was not a performance bonus, but rather was part of a 300k bonus that Diaz received at least in part for fulfiling UFC 143 media duties. The 300k bonus was intended to compensate for the percentage of PPV revenue that Diaz would have received in a title bout with GSP, had it not been called off when Diaz failed to fulfill his media obligations. A percentage of PPV is a standard method of compensation for stars in major main event fights.
At this point, it appears as if the NSAC fine of 30% will extend not to the entire 300k, but to 65k of it.

Most likely, Nick will be fined 30 percent of $200k and $65k *bonus* … the order for that should come down within next two weeks.

NSAC hasn’t made up their mind. NSAC Chair has 30 days to issue a written order to decide what to take. 30% of 265k is target.

That’s what I said. If nothing changes, he’ll be fined off $265k. Chances they’ll count the full $300k now very slim.

The $65k bonus was not a fight night bonus. It was part of a $300k bonus Diaz received from the UFC for not missing 143 press conferences.

According to Kizer, he was told Diaz lost PPV incentives after noshowing St. Pierre pc. The $300k bonus made up for those losses at 143.
