When UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey announced Friday morning that her next fight would be not with Miesha Tate as expected, but rather with Holly Holm, there was a widespread degree of surprise.

Holm herself told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto that she had already accepted a fight against Sarah Kaufman, so the Rousey fight was very unexpected. Tate too found the announcement wholly unexpected, via Instagram.

I am extremely disappointed how all the events unfolded this morning regarding news that I will not be fighting Ronda Rousey. I was told after my last win that I had earned the title shot. I’ve already begun training for Rousey and I was shocked to hear the announcement this morning. I regret this for not only myself, but my team, sponsors and the fans who like me believed my next fight was for the title.

Tate is on a four-fight win streak, over Liz Carmouche, Rin Nakai, Sara McMann and most recently Jessica Eye.
