Superbon Singha Mawynn has a tough first assignment on his road back to featherweight kickboxing gold this weekend at “ONE Fight Night 11: Eersel vs. Menshikov” on Prime Video.
The former divisional king faces No. 5-ranked contender Tayfun Ozcan on home soil when ONE Championship returns to Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, this Friday, June 9. And fans in the U.S. and Canada can watch it live and for free on Prime Video with an Amazon Prime membership.
This is a match Superbon, currently the No. 1-ranked featherweight kickboxing contender, is not taking lightly. The Thai sees the significant threat his rival offers, and he likens the Dutch-Turkish striker to upcoming world title challenger Marat Grigorian.
“His style is similar to Marat Grigorian. Both of them have the same fighting style – heavy hitter, good kickboxing style, and good punch combination.”
“I can’t be careless because he has heavy and sharp hands. He also has high fight IQ. He has shown in his fights against Sitthichai and Marat that he was able to adjust himself to the changing situations very well.”
The pair have shared common opponents in Grigorian and Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong, with Superbon holding victories over both and Ozcan suffering close losses.
Given the body of information from those battles, Superbon has had much to research ahead of his bout with “Turbine.”
While the Thai superstar credits his upcoming foe for his positive attributes, he has also seen noticeable gaps in his game and because of that, he foresees a knockout win on Friday.
“If you watch his fight with Sitthichai and Marat, you will know how good he is. But sometimes, his attacks are inconsistent and lack of impact force,” Superbon said.
“I think we will be even in the first round. But in the second round, I’ll probably throw weapons more often and more violently. One of my attacks may knock him out in round two or three.”
Grigorian is set to become the first challenger to reigning divisional king Chingiz Allazov at ONE Fight Night 13 in August, but Superbon is adamant that he is next in line.
The 32-year-old Thai was handed his first defeat in nearly five years by “Chinga” in January, and he lost the world title in the process.
He believes he should have received a shot at reclaiming the crown from the Azerbaijani-Belarusian star after their first meeting, but it didn’t come to pass.
That was a bitter pill for Superbon to swallow, but he’s fine with taking on Ozcan to get his opportunity, as a win over “Turbine” would make it a clean sweep of every other fighter in the top-five rankings.
“I think I deserve a world title shot right now because I won (against) almost everyone in this division. I only lost to Chingiz. I (am) still in the top of ranking,” he said.
“Actually, I deserved a rematch with Chingiz immediately after that loss. But if ONE Championship wants me to fight with Tayfun first and then (take the) title shot, that’s totally fine for me.”
