Chael Sonnen’s appearance at a Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) licensing hearing scheduled for April 27 has been postponed until mid-May.The five members of the NSAC will decide by majority whether or not to grant Sonnen both a fighter’s license and a second’s license.
The second’s license is required for Sonnen to fill a rumored coaching slot opposite Michael Bisping in the next season of the reality series “The Ultimate Fighter.” A fighter’s license is required for Sonnen to fight in Las Vegas.
A source close to the fighter’s camp told MMAjunkie.com that the delay comes not from Sonnen but his federal probation officer, who has denied him permission to enter Clark County as part of a mandate to keep convicted felons out of the county for the Laughlin River Run, an annual motorcycle rally that’s in its past seen violence from rival motorcycle clubs.
However impossible it would be for Sonnen to cause trouble at a motorcycle rally, it appears he’s been caught up in a preemptive step by federal law enforcement to avoid such an incident as the brawl at a 2002 rally that left dead three bikers from the Mongols and Hells Angels.
Earlier this month, Sonnen was sentenced to two years of probation and a $10,000 fine for his role in a fraudulent real-estate deal. His real-estate license also was revoked as a condition of a plea bargain he struck with prosecutors.
However, Kevin Iole is reporting via twitter that there are no such restrictions:
Spoke to Officer Jay Rivera at LV Police. No restriction on Sonnen or any other felons from coming to NV.
The latest report is that California may reopen the Sonnen hearing, via Dave Meltzer’s radio show:
Dave Meltzer: California is unhappy with Mr. Sonnen, so he may have to um, I don’t know, they may reopen his hearing there in that state.
Bryan Alvarez: Based on statements he made under oath?
Dave Meltzer: Mmmhmm, that were not true. That might do it to you.
