With a rematch with UFC middleweight Anderson Silva hanging in the balance, Chael Sonnen did what he had to do.

And not much more.

Michael Bisping put in a valiant effort in the pair’s UFC on FOX 2 co-main event, flashing improved wrestling defense and gritty clinchwork in the 15-minute affair, but Sonnen ultimately took over in crunch time and walked away with the unanimous-decision win at Chicago’s United Center.

Sonnen didn’t take long to prove he could take the fight to the floor, doing so almost immediately. To his credit, Bisping worked back to his feet and landed a few strikes before being deposited on the floor again. The Brit again got to his feet, but Sonnen remained tight, stifling any potential Bisping offense by keeping the action close.

Bisping briefly tried his own takedown, but he instead was warned for grabbing the shorts. Still, while Sonnen looked to have edged the round, he also looked to be a bit tired and out of sorts, and Bisping deserved much credit for keeping the action tight.
