There was a time when the primary means through which MMA competitons took place was gym fights. Even in the mid 90s when there were very few legitimate events, gym fight were common.

With the spread of amateur and professional MMA, the threat of law suits or seriosu accidents, awareness of blood borne disease, and host of other solid reasons, the practive has largely died out.

However, in Israel, a Shotokan karate black belt walked into an MMA gym and explained that BJJ didn’t work.

As the great Rickson Gracie says, If we fight for money, I’ll stop hitting you when you ask me to. If we fight for honor, I’ll stop hitting you when I feel like it. In this case, gym owner and MMA fighter Roy Peretz afforded the challenger the gentle way out.
