Silva manager articulates our awe at Diaz

At UFC 183 Nick Diaz put on a display of, of, of well it’s hard even to say what – bravado, showmanship, reality – laying on the floor, sticking his butt out, adjusting his underwear, in a fight with ANDERSON SILVA. What happened was without precedent, and felt so far from the norm it could be a work of Outsider Art.

Silva’s manager Ed Soares appeared recently on Ariel Helwani‘s The MMA Hour, and ably articulated what was so hard to put into words.

“Speaking to my business partner Jorge [Guimaraes], he said that was one of the greatest shoots he’d ever seen,” said Soares as transcribed by Chuck Mindenhal for MMA Fighting. “Nick Diaz going and laying down, Nick Diaz doing what he was doing, and not only doing that…but doing that to Anderson Silva.”

“I mean, if you’re going to lay down in a mixed martial arts fight in the UFC, you’ve got to have balls. But to do that against Anderson Silva, dude, you’re an a–hole, man. That guy’s got balls.”

“He backed it up. He went out there and went toe-to-toe with him. I’ve got nothing but respect for Nick Diaz.”

In all seriousness, Soares meant Nick Diaz was a a–hole in a good way. Who else on the planet can you say that about? There is only one Nick Diaz on the planet, and the sport is so much richer for it.

Nick Diaz is an artist.
