Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor was one of the most lucrative events in combat sports history. It was competitive enough, and Floyd is old enough, that a rematch is plausible. If you were Conor McGregor would you rather get wrestled by Khabib Nurmagomedov for 25 minutes for $10 million, or box Mayweather again for another $100+ million? If you were Floyd Mayweather would you rather spend all your money til it runs out or make hundreds of millions of dollars boxing up McGregor, again?
However, Showtime Sports executive Stephen ‘I am not a Weasel’ Espinoza spoke recently with TMZ Sports, and said while he’d be happy to promote MayMac 2, he doesn’t think it will come to pass.
I don’t think so, said Espinoza, as transcribed by Jed Meshew for MMA Fighting. Floyd seems pretty happy retired. I don’t think we’ll see him in the ring again, and it seems like the UFC really wants McGregor back in the cage. I doubt [it]. It’s Floyd’s call at some point, but I haven’t heard anything from him that makes it seem like he’s thinking about McGregor or anything else.
It is [tough to walk away from another $300 million] but at a certain point, 20 years in the sport, 22 years in the sport, at a certain point he’s given enough to the sport, so I don’t begrudge him wanting to retire.
If there’s a demand for it, and people want to see it, then sure we’ll get behind the business.
While Espinoza’s sentiments are reasonable, Mayweather’s spending habits are less so. ‘Money’ reportedly spends up to $75 million a year and prior to MayMac didn’t have sufficient liquidity to pay a $22.2 million IRS payment from 2015, so the $300 million he made, less taxes, isn’t going to last forever. Expect him to fight again. Against who is another question.
