Allegedly Title IX was about sports equalities, back in the late 60’s it was said women should not do sports as it can affect the reproductive system (like a MMA kick to the balls wouldn’t do the same to a guy). What I have seen in the wake of Title IX is that equality came with a price.
What if Martin Luthar King’s speech was about taking rights from whites and giving them to blacks? Would the civil rights movement had any real support? When women fight for equality they are saying we can do what men can do. Treat us equal. My Mom proved that women can sometimes do more then men. I feel as if they should be treated equal. I am not saying Cyborg should fight a guy in the UFC (she could probably win). She should be allowed to do what she wants and not be restricted. Women’s MMA should be able to grow without taking anything away from mens MMA.
As a guy who grew up Wrestling I paid the price of Title IX and my son will in the future. The Football programs will still have the biggest budgets and I do not see women cracking into the NFL any time soon. My wrestling was always second fiddle to my football team, from the athletic departments perspective. When Title IX started to affect the funding of schools they just cut the sports like Wrestling, Swimming etc. We had females on our wrestling team but we were still the easy target. MMA relies on Wrestling as it does BJJ and other sports. MMA has a home for women unlike the NFL.
I know in my heart that women belong in sports and should be given equal opportunities to participate and earn scholarships. Cutting sports that allow women or have a potential professional sports carrer. Isn’t that the basis of a great student athlete program? To have your student athletes have the potential to continue on in their chosen sports?
I support what Title IX started out to be. I do not support what it has become. Wrestlers are some of the few athletes that sacrifice so much for so little gain or potential fame. We wrestled because we love it. Now so athletic directors can keep the tax payers money flowing they are cutting great sports instead of finding ways to make females equal. It wasn’t about balancing budgets it was about fair and reasonable disbursement of government money and that has not happened!
