See two Sub of the Year candidates in one night – UFN 24 & Bellator 38

 At last night’s Bellator 38, Rage in the Cage standout Richard Hale submitted former Michigan State wrestler Nike Fekete in a quarterfinal matchup using an inverted triangle choke – the same move that earned Toby Imada multiple submission of the year awards in 2009, and helped Bellator earn major interest during its critical first season.

Hale saw the move the night before weigh-ins on YouTube and thought it would be cool to give it a go. “I’ve never even thrown an inverted triangle before,” Hale today told MMAjunkie.com Radio.

“As soon as we hit the ground, I felt he was out,” Hale said. “But they said keep going until the ref stops you, so I kept it locked in, threw some body shots, and went from there.”

(Unfortunately, a full 10 seconds passed between the time Fekete his the mat and the ref realized he was unconscious.)

Not to be outdone, Ultimate Fight Night 24 offered the first use of Eddie Bravo’s signature Twister in the UFC. Like Jon Jones who attributed the Ong Bak like striking skills showcased vs Stephan Bonnar to watching youtube videos, “It’s something that I saw a long time ago on the internet on video,” Jung said via a translator. “It’s one of Eddie Bravo’s techniques. It’s something I practiced because it just looks fun, and so I do it quite a bit in practice. I always told people I was going to try it some time in competition and I wanted to do it in the UFC and I was able to.”
