American superstar Sage Northcutt (11-3) is preparing to kick off his comeback at ONE Championship’s first U.S. event – and it’s fair to say that he’s excited to show his home fans what the combat sports giant has to offer.

“Super Sage” faces Pakistani MMA star Ahmed Mujtaba (10-2) at “ONE Fight Night 10: Johnson vs. Moraes III,” which goes down at the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado, on May 5.

For years, Northcutt has heard of the organization’s ambitions to break ground in the U.S. and hold live shows in America.

Now, in just a few short months, that dream will finally become a reality.

“I think it’s great, ONE Championship coming to the U.S. I believe that they were planning on it right before the COVID stuff happened, and that kind of stopped and delayed it,” Northcutt said.

“But I think it’s just the beginning of something great. First fight in Denver, Colorado. It’s going to be super fun, super exciting for the fans to watch the whole fight card. So, I think it’s going to be awesome, and I’m looking forward to ONE Championship coming to America a whole lot more too.”

The landmark event is headlined by a blockbuster trilogy MMA fight between ONE flyweight world champion Demetrious Johnson and former divisional kingpin Adriano Moraes.

“Mighty Mouse” is well known to U.S. fans, owing to his legendary run in his home country. Meanwhile, Brazilian star Moraes is based in Florida and made his name in ONE, where he became the promotion’s most dominant flyweight in its history.

With the pair joining other American stars such as Tye Ruotolo and Alyse Anderson on the card, Northcutt feels that the inclusion of local talent will only build the hype even further.

“I’m super grateful that I’m getting at this fight and getting to fight on the U.S. card, so I’m excited for that. Demetrious Johnson obviously headlining the card, that fight’s going to be fantastic. I think that’s huge,” he said.

But also, ONE is known for providing some variety to its shows.

While American fans may be used to seeing just MMA fights, the Asian promotion regularly holds bouts in various other disciplines, including muay Thai, kickboxing, and submission grappling.

That variety, “Super Sage” believes, is what separates ONE from other competitors in the marketplace and could be a key difference as the Asian giant prepares to head into new territory.

“ONE Championship’s unique because it’s not just MMA. They have multiple sports they can incorporate, so I think that’s great,” Northcutt said.

“They’re not just a one-sport organization. They have submission grappling, they have muay Thai, they have MMA, they have so many different things that they have. So, I think just having that as part of it is really different and unique.”
