Mixed martial arts is regulated across North America by state, provincial, tribal, and municipal government athletic commissions. That is, unfortunately, not the generally the case internationally. In most countries, safety is left in the hands of fight promoters. That would be funny, if it was not so scary.

ACs mandate that an MD and ambulance be present and a host of other safety measure. At a recent event in Russia, a fighter suffered a seizure following a kick KO loss. The referee first tried to raise the unconscious fighter’s legs; this is standard procedure following a choke out, as the fighter goes out from a lack of blood. It is not appropriate for a knockout.

And it got worse from there. For long, long minutes, no one appeared to know what to do.

The founder of Team Oplot is UFC heavyweight Oleksiy Oliynyk, who said via social networks that the fighter in question is back to normal.

The promotion also released a statement in Russian saying the doctors were present, but dressed in civilian clothing. They did not say whether an ambulance was present, perhaps also dressed in civilian clothing.
