Ben Rothwell was scheduled to meet Fabricio Werdum in the co-main event of UFC 203, an event which is headlined by a heavyweight title fight between Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem.
Rothwell and former champion Werdum were both coming off loses and the matchup was an important one for the division. The winner would have kept themselves in the title picture and the loser would have found themselves on a tough road back.
Unfortunately, Rothwell had to withdraw from the event:
Travis Browne will get a second crack at Fabricio Werdum.
MMAjunkie today confirmed with two people familiar with the agreement that Browne and Werdum have verbally committed to meet at UFC 203. Those people spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are not publicly authorized to discuss such matters.
The move was necessitated by an injury to Ben Rothwell, who was originally expected to face Werdum. Bout agreements for the new contest are expected to be finalized shortly.
