Rory Mac: I’d never stab GSP in the back

“It has never been my goal to be a f@$%ing billionaire. I’m going to live in the woods one day. Hunt, be weird, not have to listen to people call me a psycho all the time.”

Back when Georges St-Pierre was champion, UFC president Dana White famously made the case that Rory MacDonald would fight his TriStar teammate.

“I guarantee you if Rory looks looks at GSP’s f—— bank account, he’ll want to beat the s— out of him,” said White at the time.

“Here’s what it always comes down, and we’ve had this conversation a million times, guys. Why are you in this? You’re in this to be the world champion.

“That’s what it’s about. It’s about winning, and becoming – see, everyone around the world knows GSP, and they love this guy. He makes s— loads of money and the list goes on and on. Rory wants that. And it’s not like we’re setting up this fight where you’re going to fight and you’re going to have to hate each other after.”

“This is the fight world. This is the world of fighting. Like I said the other day, I said this is the fight business, not the friend business. It’s not.”

However, MacDonald has been equally adamant that he wouldn’t, and he repeated that during an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, noting that when the potential rival showed up at TriStar, GSP met him with open arms. MacDonald also said if GSP does return, he believes it will be for superfights only, making them fighting each other a non issue.

“He welcomed it,” said MacDonald as transcribed by David St. Martin for MMAFighting. “I never forgot it, either. A lot of people now are asking me to fight him, this and that. They don’t see the things that I got to see, that I appreciate. Not only as a martial artist, but for myself. I learned so much from him and I gained a lot from his kindness and what he gave to me. I’m not going to forget that and stab him in the back.”

“You know what? Life’s not about money. Obviously, I’m doing this for money, also, but it has never been my goal to be a f—ing billionaire. I’m going to live in the woods one day. Hunt, be weird, not have to listen to people call me a psycho all the time.”

But before that MacDonald wants to become welterweight champion, and then eventually try 185.

“I’ll move up,” said MacDonald. “Not because I have to. I’ve talked about it before. It’s just sort of curiosity and the experience to fight bigger guys. But I want to do what I have to do at this division first.”

“I’ll probably still fight at welterweight, too. Because it’s easy for me to make welterweight so if I can, if I can fight enough and the UFC is cool with it, sure.

“I want to overcome obstacles and test myself and find out who I really am.”
