UFC middleweight Yoel Romero recently came on Submission Radio and discussed his fight with Lyoto Machida at The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 4 Finale on Jun 27 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Translation for the former Olympic silver medalist in freestyle wrestling for Cuba was provided by his manager Heber Mendez.

The match is potentially a classic Wrestler vs. Karate fight, with the long range One Punch Kill philosophy meeting the wrestler’s desire to take it to the mat and grind there. However, Romero said he is willing to stand.

Yoel said that he doesn’t have a problem if he has to stand up and strike with Machida,” said the manager. “He says that his team has been training everything. They’ve been training Jiu Jitsu, Karate, Muay Thai, and standing up, boxing, and striking. He says if he’s in the clinch with Machida then he’ll use his Muay Thai, if he’s on the ground he’ll use his wrestling and Jiu Jitsu, and if he stays standing then he’ll use his boxing and his striking techniques that he’s been practicing with his team, and that he’s not really worried about standing with Machida. He says that he’s very confident in his stand up game and that wherever the fight goes is where he’s willing to take it. He doesn’t really have a specific option that he’s looking to do.

He says that he’s not worried about going all five rounds. He says that this training he has been training and working on fighting five rounds, and that he says his last couple of fights that he’s been a little tired, but he says that the other fighter has also been a little gassed in the third round. But he says that his last couple of fights he’s been able to finish it in the third round. He’s been tired but he says that he’s more than capable enough of putting on a good performance and finishing the fight strong. Because I think in his last two or three fights he has finished the opponents in the third round.”

If he wins his next fight and the UFC decides that he should be up next to fight for the belt, that of course he will fight for the belt. [He says] that he wouldn’t want to fight Jacare; because if it’s a title or fight Jacare, he wants to fight to get the title, because that’s his goal. To be UFC Champion

Chris Weidman, he is beatable. He says that everybody is beatable. He says that nobody is invincible in the sport of MMA, that he believes if he was to fight Chris Weidman it will be a 50/50 chance; that he would have 50 percent of winning and so would Weidman. So it could go either way. So he says that he is beatable, but that everybody in the division is beatable.

He applauds him [Chris Weidman] for being such a great champion, but of course he’s beatable.
