RIZIN FF says declares itself to be the “new PRIDE.” PRIDE had the greatest heavyweight in mixed martial arts history, Fedor Emelianenko. And PRIDE had many of the greatest fights in MMA history.

RIZIN did get Fedor, but his skills had diminished in a rising sport, and they matched him with Jaideep Singh. The middling kickboxer was on a three-fight losing streak, and hadn’t won in five years. He was out in just over three minutes.

PRIDE also had freakshow fights, and here owner Nobuyuki Sakakibara excels at aping his previous efforts. However, Sakakibara has easily topped himself with this one. Indeed, until he matches a highly trained fighter with a house plant, this is, truly, the mother of all freakshow fights.

In the red corner, Gabi Garcia. She is 31, a nine-time world champion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, stands 6′ 2″ tall, and weighs 245. Here she is with little friend Wanderlei Silva.

Here she is with little friend Mirko Cro Cop.

Before and after, the gi.

Japanese MMA traditionally held the hugest events of the year on New Year’s Eve. RIZIN intends the same, holding the finals of their Grand Prix. And they have a fight for the ages planned for Gabi Garcia.

She will be facing Shinobu Kandori.

Shinobu is a 52 year old, 5′ 7″ tall, 165 pound politician, who represents the Liberal Democratic Party, in the House of Councillors in the Diet (Japan’s national legislature). She is also a retired pro wrestler. She is also a former world-class Judo, with a bronze medal at the world championship in 1984, before Garcia was born. And for a time, Shinobu was a very credible MMA fighter, going 4-1, which included splitting fights with the highly credible Russian Judoka turned fighter Svetlana Goundarenko. Unfortunately, Shinobu’s last fight was in 2000.

Shinobu Kandori yesterday:

And today:

For what it’s worth, Shinobu was ” target=”_blank”>really good at pro wrestling. She did a barbed wire match too; it’s a must see, if you frequent the entryway of the local ER.

Garcia is 3-0 in MMA, winning all fight in under three minutes. She stopped Lei’D Tapa with strikes and tapped Anna Malyukova and Destanie Yarbrough.

“The Staredown: My what big eyes you have”

“What in the actual f***??!?”

“Boo!”

At some point, someone should remind the powers that be at RIZIN that mixed martial arts is an actual sport, in which the athletes are trying to hurt each other. Grandmothers getting beaten down is not entertaining for normal people.
