A leaner Schafer rushed forward at every opportunity, and a bodylock trip scores him top position just 35 seconds into the fight. Rivera defended well on his back and was able to escape to his feet, but Schafer stayed tight and shoved him back to the floor, settling into half-mount. The crowd quickly grew restless as Schafer controlled from the top, but “Red” picked up the punching volume in the closing minutes. Rivera briefly worked to a seated position, but he had to go back to the floor when Schafer threatened to take the back.

Rivera looked to strike in the second, but Schafer slipped an early punch and moved into the clinch. Rivera defended well and eventually pulled free, wrenching his leg away from a desperate Schafer. That was all the opening Rivera needed, and he spun and settled into top position, unloading a series of heavy punches that found their mark. Schafer wilted under the pressure, and as he tried to cover up against the cage, “El Conquistador” continued the barrage. Referee Herb Dean offered several warnings for Schafer to “fight back,” but battered and bloodied, he could only cover up on his back, and the fight was waved off 91 seconds into the third round.

After suffering a devastating knockout loss to Anthony Johnson in October, welterweight Charlie Brenneman went back to his wrestling roots.

It worked.

Brenneman took Daniel Roberts down early and often, grinding his way to a unanimous-decision win on the preliminary card of Friday night’s UFC on FX 1event at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.

Shalorus stalked from the outset, switching stances while looking to advance. The longer Nurmagomedov did a decent job of managing distance, and Shaloris was slow to attack on the feet. When Nurmagomedov tried to dive in for a takedown, Shalorus sprawled to perfection. But as he rose to back away, Nurmagomedov scored a massive left uppercut, and Shalorus crumpled.

Nurmagomedov immediately pounced and unleashed a brutal barrage of ground-and-pound. Shalorus somehow survived the onslaught and returned to his feet winging wild punches, and it was credit to referee Mario Yamasaki for allowing the fight to continue. Nurmagomedov, who unleashed rapid-fire shots from all angles, appeared a bit fatigued, but he was able to avoid a few wild Shalorus hooks in the closing seconds.

Camoes controlled the center of the cage early, but he walked into a few strikes from his southpaw opponent and looked as if he might be in some trouble on the feet. Hayden then took the fight to the floor with a powerful double-leg takedown, but he quickly returned to the feet. Camoes then shot in with a takedown attempt, but Hayden wound up in top in the back-and-forth exchanges.

Settling in on his back, Camoes then wen to an omo plata attempt and used the maneuver to sweep to the top. Hayden tried desperately to pull free, but Camoes slid his left arm under the neck for a rear-naked choke.

The fighters opened cautiously on their feet, with both looking to pick their shots in a few standup exchanges. But Pineda quickly moved into the clinch and used a bodylock to drag the fight to the floor. Pineda transitioned immediately to mount and went to work with punches from the top.

Schilling predictably rolled to avoid damage, and Pineda went after the rear-naked choke. It didn’t come easily, as Schilling tried to escape to his feet and use the cage to peel his opponent from his back, but Pineda quickly weaved the choke in tight, and his opponent was forced to tap at the 1:37 mark of the opening round.

Denis wasted little time in starting the assault, punching almost immediately after the opening bell. While he found some success with both his right and left hands, Sandoval stood firm in the pocket and looked to return fire.

Things changed when Denis grabbed a Thai clinch in the center of the octagon, firing off four elbows that landed flush to the temple. Sandoval collapsed to his back, and Denis didn’t bother to follow, as “The Ninja of Love” proved that lighter-weight fights can indeed finish fights.
