39-year-old former WBA/WBC Welterweight champion and the former WBC light middleweight champion Ricardo Mayorga made his MMA debut vs. Wesley Tiffer at Omega MMA’s Battle of the Americas on Friday night in Managua, Nicaraga.

The bout had been intended at a catchweight of 160, but weighed in 175.9 pounds. Tiffer by contrast was 153.

Mayorga spent most of the bout on the ground, frequently in bottom mount, but in the second powered out of a triangle attempt and landed a knee that appeared to be illegal. When the ringside physician declared Tiffer unable to continue, referee Milton Rosales Toshi did not call the foul, but rather declared Mayorga the winner.

Then there were a lot of fireworks. Not metaphorical holy f@$%ing $#!* in cage action, but the booms in air fireworks.

And if all that was not weird enough, the mat cover was for the WSoF.

In 2010, Mayorga was scheduled to fight former UFC lightweight contender Din Thomas in the USA for Shine Fights banner in the United States. Boxing promoter Don King won an injunction that prevented the bout, as he had Mayorga under contract at the time.
