The Russian language site MMABoxing.ru is reporting that undefeateed Russian lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov will be fighting Gilbert Melendez on February 22, 2014 at UFC 170 in Las Vegas.
While this information is informal and left to settle only the date of the match as both fighters are willing to meet with each other. The deal is almost complete and the probability that the fight will happen is 95%. Khabib Nurmagomedov is the best active Russian fighter, and is the 7th ranked lightweight in the UFC.
In his last fight the Russians won a unanimous victory in the UFC over Pat Healy. His four UFC fights before that were wins over Kamal Sharlousom, Gleison Tibau, Thiago Tavares, and Abel Trujillo. As usual, the final part of Nurmagomedov’s camp will be at American Kickboxing Academy, where he had excellent relations with other fighters.
Gilbert Melendez has had a UFC title shot, losing a controversial decision to Benson Henderson. Melendez holds wins over Josh Thomson, Shinya Aoki, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Jorge Masvidal, and Diego Sanchez, among ohers.
The main event at UFC 170 will be a Daniel Cormier vs. Rashad Evans.
