Ahead of his main event fight with Dan Henderson, Rashad Evans reflects on his goals in the sport now.
I want to be a champion again for sure,” said Evans, “But more than anything I want to be somebody that excites the people.”
Thinking about Mike Tyson and what he’s done in the sport. He was so exciting because of what it meant to see him. When you saw Mike Tyson fight, you knew one thing.”
You knew it was going to be something you had to see. That’s what I want. If I can bring that, then I’ve done what I want to do.”
Evans expressed respect for Henderson’s longevity, but said he has not sure about fighting when he, too, is 42.
It’s amazing that he’s still going and not just that he’s still going but at the level that he’s still going. It’s one thing if he was fighting on a bunch of smaller shows, but he’s still going at the top of the top and he’s still one of the top guys.’’
It all depends on how much I’m loving the sport. And I do love the sport, but you have to love it from a different place when you compete at this level because you have to be able to push yourself every single time when you’re in training camp, and even when you’re out of training camp.
When you commit yourself to this lifestyle, you have to go full-on bore. And that is something I cannot say I will always have.’’
And what does Evans predict for the fight?
Somebody’s gonna get knocked out,” said Evans. “In theory, the wrestling should neutralize each other and the only thing that’s left is to stand up and punch. So somebody’s getting knocked out.’’
