Cruz was the first ever UFC bantamweight champion when the UFC transition the WEC into the UFC in early 2011. Cruz defended that title twice before several major injuries left him on the shelf for almost a full three years.

Cruz returned to the UFC in September of 2014 with an impressive win, but again was sidelined with an injury.

This past weekend Cruz returned again and was matched up with current bantamweight champion TJ Dillshaw, whom had dominated the division in his absence. Cruz and Dillashaw battled for five close rounds, but Cruz edged out the split decision win to reclaim the UFC bantamweight title and also make a splash in the pound for pound rankings.
