During The Ultimate Fighter 12 Josh Koscheck infamously delivered an impromptu neck massage to Team GSP staff medic (or male nurse) Brad Tate. The altercation happened after Tate razzed Koscheck for his performance in the fake knee incident with Paul Daley at UFC 113.

Kos eventually apologized, and Tate quipped that after GSP knocked out Koscheck, “I might hold back a little on his pain medication.”

That was back in 2010.

In 2013, Tate, an Albuquerque Fire Department lieutenant with a decade-long career, was fired. According to AQB journal, “a city Personnel Board found he had provided substandard care, intimidated and bullied patients and their families and falsified records to show that patients who called 911 had refused care and transportation.”

In April of this year, the city settled with Tate for $300,000 in a deal that did not include the return of his job. The article covers a number of disturbing incidents.

According to the article, Tate said in a court affidavit that he was let go as cutman last November after a manager found negative news reports about his firing by the city. The constant negative publicity on the Internet has poisoned his reputation, wrote Tate’s attorney, former Albuquerque City Councilor Michael Cadigan in a lawsuit filed earlier this year.

However, Tate was back in action at UFC 206. Unfortunately, his work was problematic. At one point a corner could be heard yelling out for a “cutman.” Eventually, Tate went to work, but given that there is just one minute between rounds, less the 10-second “Seconds Out” order, less getting to the corner, less breathing, every second matters.

More disturbing however was Tate’s use of a rag to rub on a swelling eye, rather than carefully pressing with a cold metal endswell. A concerned Joe Rogan could be heard remarking correctly, “That’s not right.”

It’s not. When to use a rag and when to use an endswell is akin to knowing the brake from the gas if you are a driver.

The Ontario AC, which scrupulously follows the rules, should review footage and take appropriate further steps as necessary.
