Three people were arrested and one person was injured Saturday night when fights broke at the mixed martial arts competitions at the North Iowa Fairgrounds.

At one point, 12 Mason City police officers, one Mason City reserve officer as well as Cerro Gordo County sheriff’s deputies and Iowa State Patrol officers were at the scene.

Mason City Police Sgt. Steve Klemas said so many Mason City officers responded that the midnight shift was called in early to help handle other calls in the city.

I think the big presence of officers helped quiet things, he said.

Officers were first called shortly before 9:30 p.m. when proprietors reported a fight in the stands.

When officers were transporting a suspect to jail, another fight was reported and officers returned to the scene with help for the sheriff’s department and the state patrol.

Klemas said three misdemeanor arrests were made, one for public intoxication, one for disorderly conduct and one on an outstanding warrant.

A male juvenile received cuts to his hand during one of the fights and was taken to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

We really haven’t had trouble there in the past, said Klemas. And the proprietors did the right thing by calling us right away.

He attributed the fights to too much drinking.
