Poirier: I didn’t mean what you said I meant

UFC lightweights Dustin Poirier and Michael Johnson fight in the main event of UFC Fight Night 94 on September 17, 2016 at State Farm Arena, in Hidalgo, Texas. About a month out, fighters very often get bitter on Twitter, and the pair did, with Johnson taking it in an unusual direction.

The UFC lightweight division is ridiculously stacked:
Champion : Eddie Alvarez
1 Khabib Nurmagomedov
2 Rafael Dos Anjos
3 Tony Ferguson
4 Nate Diaz
5 Edson Barboza
6 Donald Cerrone
7 Anthony Pettis
8 Dustin Poirier
9 Michael Chiesa
10 Michael Johnson
However, while the talent is deep, the champion is not dominant – three of Alvarez’s past four wins were via split decision. Despite the depth, it is, truly, an “on any given night” division.
Further, #6 ranked Cerone looks phenomenal at welterweight, and could stay there. #4 ranked Nate Diaz is doing nothing until a trilogy fight with UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. #7 ranked Pettis is on a three fight losing streak. #1 ranked Nurmagomedov has suffered a terrible string of injuries.
Ferguson is on an incredible eight-fight-winning streak, but his last loss was to Johnson.
Johnson or Poirier are in fact far higher in the division than the numbers indicate; a dominant win by either could land a #1 contender fight.
