After both Pettis and Lauzon openly pined for the matchup against one another the UFC brass awarded them a date at the Satiama Super Arena in Japan on February 25. The Roufusport fighter said that the bout with Lauzon is just what he needs to get himself back into title contention.
I thought that it’s a great matchup, Pettis told US Combat Sports. Joe Lauzon is just coming off a Melvin Guillard win he’s breaking in the top ten and in the top five. I want to fight top five guys so I can get that title shot back. Henderson’s getting a title shot and that’s supposed to be my position so I want to go back for that. Fighting a guy like Joe Lauzon and winning that impressively would get me right back in that title shot.
While Lauzon has shown the ability to surprise opponents with a slick submission game in the past, Pettis said that all of his techniques match up favorably with his UFC 144 opponent.
I definitely think everybody I fight against my striking is going to be my strength but I’m getting better everywhere. My wrestling is getting better, my jiu-jitsu is just as good as his I think, and for me it’s just a matter of having a good game plan and following through.
