“I have been working on my wrestling diligently,” he said. “I have been training really hard with a lot of good wrestlers. I hired a new wrestling coach. That’s the area of my game that I lack but I definitely came a long way since my debut.”
Pettis hopes that his fight with Guida will truly make him the number one contender at 155 pounds. He is justifiably suspicious though, as he has already had one title shot pulled out from underneath him. Pettis says it doesn’t really matter though, because he believes he was the top contender already.
“If it’s the right amount of money and it makes sense, I’ll fight a teammate,” Pettis said. “If it’s not going to move me up the ladder or we’re both not going for the same goal then, I mean, it wouldn’t make sense.”
Notice that Showtime says “teammate” and not “friend”. That’s because he doesn’t have friends in the 155 pound division.
“A lot of people ask me why I train in Milwaukee,” Pettis said. “There’s better training partners in other places. I don’t want to become friends with any lightweights. I mean, my goal is to be the lightweight champion and I’m not looking to make friends with these guys, so honestly, right now, that wouldn’t be an issue with me at all.”
