Overeem unhurt after ‘huge explosion’ at hotel

UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem has a trilogy fight with Fabricio Werdum at UFC 213 on Saturday. On Monday ‘Reem was taking an afternoon nap at a Residence Inn in Albuquerque, New Mexico, near his camp at Jackson-Wink MMA. Suddenly he was awoken by a “huge explosion.”

Albuquerque Fire Department spokeswoman Lieutenant Carla Williams told Matthew Reisen for the Albuquerque Journal that firefighters responded at around 6:00 p.m. local time and found flames and smoke coming from a storage area in the main building.

Crews were able to contain the fire to the point of origin, said Williams. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.

Overeem spoke with the reporter.

I heard a big boom, he said. I thought it was nothing going on, but one of my teammates came and got me ‘we need to get out of here now.’

‘Reem said as he left his room he could feel the flames and heat coming from the next building.

There was a huge black cloud, he said. It was a little hectic, but I think the situation is under control now.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

This event should have far less effect on the fighter than Overeem’s last mishap. Prior to his last fight vs. Mark Hunt at UFC 209 in March, ‘Reem suffered serious food poisoning, but still managed to win.
