The UFC has descended into being spiced with trash talk, to be driven by it. That took a sharp turn towards the light on Saturday night at UFC 217. Georges St-Pierre apologized twice for using a curse word after knocking out the valiant, expletive happy Michael Bisping.
And ‘Thug’ Rose Namajunas emerged as a saint. We have to love one another, she explained, after knocking out Joanna ‘Violence’ Jedrzejczyk in the first. Still in the Octagon, Joe Rogan, the best speaker in MMA, or anywhere, summed it up.
“I’m at a loss for words,” he said. Then he asked how it felt to hear, “The winner, and new UFC strawweight champion of the world.”
Namajunas, a survivor of sexual abuse, replied with deeply moving grace, in her unabashedly inner-city Milwaukee accent.
“It sound like butta,” she replied. “It sound like butta. … It don’t [feel real], it feel like a movie right now.”
There’s so much like crap going on the media, news, and stuff, and I just want to try and use my gift of martial arts to try and make this world a better place, to change the world.” she said. “This belt, this belt don’t mean nothing man. Just be a good person. That’s it.
“This [belt] is extra. This is awesome, but let’s just give each other hugs and be nice man. I mean I know we fight but this is entertainment – afterwards, it’s nothing.”
Rogan reminded Namajunas that she got the formerly undefeated Jedrzejczyk to tap due to strikes, is the new world champion, and asked her how she feels.
I feel like a normal person, man,” she replied. “That’s it. I’m just regular. They ain’t nothing special here.
Namajunas believes that in her good and humble heart, but she’s the saint we need. And the champion of the world.
As for what’s next, hopefully, the first thing that happens is the sport of mixed martial arts listening to her. We need to.
