Charles Oliveira fights Max Holloway at UFC Fight Night 74 on Sunday, and thinks that a win over the Hawaiian will put him one fight from title shot.
After this fight I’m going to be in the top five and on my way to fight for the belt, said Oliveira to Mike Bohn and Matt Erickson for MMAjunkie, through an interpreter. For sure I’ll be in the top five of the division and maybe one more fight (until a title shot), or go straight for the belt.
After my last defeat we sat down and everyone talked about what we needed to change. When I fought against Cub, I was injured and never should have fought, but I wanted to. I went in there against Frankie Edgar and did some things we didn’t train to do. Now it’s really just focus and sit down and really create a strategy.
I’ve always said you’ve got to respect his stand up, but he has to respect my stand up too. I think my stand up is up to par with that, but I have to respect his stand up as much as he has to respect my ground game.
It’s going to be a great fight. I think he’s a complete fighter and he’s good on the ground. You have to respect his overall skills but it’s going to be ‘Fight of the Night’ for sure.
While Oliveira is on a four-fight winning streak, and holds the most submission wins in featherweight history, Holloway is on a six-fight win streak, and is tied for most stoppages in division history.
