A progressive state known for their longtime support of mixed martial arts, Ohio has taken another step to level the playing field in amateur mixed martial arts. Ohio will institute a cruiserweight division on a provisional basis on May 1.
Bernie Profato, Executive Director of the Ohio Athletic Commission, told MMAWeekly.com the weight class will run from 206 to 225 pounds, with heavyweight running from 226 to 265 pounds in the amateur ranks.
“For fighters just starting out, we saw them in some difficult bouts, especially with a fighter that was 210 fighting someone 250 or more,” said Profato on Monday.
The new weight class will be under a trial basis in amateur MMA, but the state has no plans of instituting the new division for professionals just yet.
