After each live event, the UFC polls various members of the media to update it’s rankings in each weight division as well as the pound for pound rankings. With only a few meaningful bouts at this past weekend’s UFC on FX 8, the middleweight division is where we saw the most movement:
Champion : Anderson Silva
1 Chris Weidman
2 Vitor Belfort
3 Yushin Okami
4 Michael Bisping
5 Costa Philippou
6 Ronaldo Souza
7 Luke Rockhold
8 Mark Munoz
9 Chael Sonnen
10 Tim Boetsch
The biggest winner of this week’s ranking update was Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza who moved up two spots to take the number six ranking. Rockhold who was previously ranked fifth moved down two spots just behind Souza. Although they didn’t compete, the mixup moved Costa Philippou up one spot and Mark Munoz down a spot. Munoz most likely is the victim of inactivity and Philippou was able to move up with Rockhold’s loss.
As a voting member of the panel, I actually agreed exactly with how the rankings adjusted, but accidentally didn’t move Souza and Rockhold correctly when entering my rankings, so that is why they show incorrectly in my rankings. I also moved Vitor Belfort into my pound for pound rankings, as I can’t justify keeping Edgar in the mix coming off three consecutive losses, albeit in world title fights. I also ranked Belfort above Cruz being he has also been inactive.
