Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holm is on a two-fight losing streak. Germaine de Randamie is ranked 10th in the division. Yet at UFC 208, they will fight for the title, a division up.
The decision to go forward with a UFC women’s featherweight division was made when it appeared that Cris Cyborg Justino was never going to make 135. Then Cyborg suffered a controversial flagged anti-doping test, so huge opportunity knocked for Holm and de Randamie, and they have dashed through the door.
Now the natural thing has happened. If the #3 bantamweight and the #10 bantamweight fight for the featherweight title, then the bantamweight champion is going to come calling. Amanda Nunes has.

Only three fighters have held UFC belts in two divisions: Randy Couture, BJ Penn, and Conor McGregor. Nunes wants to be the fourth, and the first woman.
However, UFC 208 takes place on February 11. On January 28, bantamweights Julianna Pena and Valentina Shevchenko fight in the main event of UFC on FOX 23, and the winner of that fight has earned a bantamweight title shot.
If the UFC is seriously interested in building a new division, featherweight, they will in all likelihood build it with featherweights. If the best women’s featherweights are all bantamweights, then the division never should have been started.
The obvious featherweight to start with is Australia’s Megan Anderson. On Saturday night she called out the winner of Holm vs. de Randamie, after winning the interim Invicta FC featherweight belt. That step was necessitated by the aforementioned anti-doping test failed by Invicta featherweight champion Cris Cyborg.
