Grappling coach Ricky Lundell appeared recently on MMAJunkie Radio, and detailed how he saved a life recently, in a Las Vegas gas station. The man was lifeless on the pavement, his wife was panicking, and his child was peering out from the car window. A crowd had gathered around him.
I’ll tell you right now: Everybody should brush up on CPR training, said Lundell, as transcribed by Steven Marrocco for MMAjunkie.
We’re like, ‘What’s going on?’ It could be a fight. Then, all of a sudden, this guy runs in and he’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, does anybody know CPR? This guy’s not breathing!’
His head is back, and he is white. Whiter than white. And I don’t have a lot of experience with people dying right there in front of me. I don’t think a lot of people do. But for Todd (Prace, a friend) and I, this isn’t a situation we see every day. And it’s not like when you see somebody get knocked out in the cage, either. That, you can tell they’re alive.
But he was lifeless. Pupils dilated totally out, body was totally white, not breathing, no pulse, no air.
While we’re doing this, the ambulance and fire truck completely drive by us going the other way. They got the directions wrong.
He would start to yawn, and then nothing would happen, and then he would start to do something, and then nothing happened. And for the first four minutes, nothing happened. And every second is crucial. Even if they don’t come back to life there, when they get to where they have the pads, or when they can stick a tube in, just by continuing to circulate the blood, your odds go way up.
So all those people that surrounded us and were watching, they’re all zombies. They’re freaking out, running around in circles, and the calmest people in those situations are the ones that end up getting through.
According to Lundell, the man is hospitalized in stable condition.
