One of the biggest news stories in MMA in 2011 was an avalanche of injuries that derailed major fights throughout the year. For example, Nick Diaz vacated his Strikeforce welterweight title for a shot at Georges St-Pierre’s UFC welterweight crown. When Diaz missed a media conference, he was out of a title fight, and was given BJ Penn instead, with Carlos Condit, originally slated to face GSP replacing Diaz in the title shot.

Then GSP got hurt, and Diaz went to to bang BJ Penn into a short-lived retirement. With the win, Diaz again was lined up to face GSP, but the champion was again injured in training, and now Diaz is fighting Condit for the UFC Iinterim Welterweight title.

Vic Mysterio of the Hammerfisting MMA Podcast caught up with Diaz, and asked about the source of GSP’s injuries.

Vic Mysterio: Do you think (GSP ) is ducking you?

Nick Diaz: “I don’t think so. I think he’s hurt. I think he might’ve hurt himself. He shouldn’t have done that.

“If it hurts, don’t do it.

“I had to go through a lot of fights like that. There were things I couldn’t do, and I couldn’t come in at 100 percent.

“So basically, heal and worry about your weight because that’s all you’re gonna be able to do is make the weight and go out there and fight. Sometimes you win some, sometimes you lose some, and sometimes you can’t be at 100 percent though.

“But, no, he hurt himself. And you know, the way the type of exercises he does too, you’re injury prone. You’re higher likely to hurt yourself doing an explosive workout exercises. I have a different type of workouts. I’m a different type of athlete. And I think that we get hurt less, and we fight more. That’s why I have had more fights than most people. I have twice as many fights as most of these guys out here.

“And I’m really young. I started out as young as you get. I get no credit for being one of the first guys in this sport at 18, 19, and every three four months we fought.”
