The Nevada Athletic Commission recently passed a new regulation, beginning August 1, requiring fighters to take a neurological exam as a condition of licensing. California is expected to follow suit this year.
According to Marc Raimondi for MMA Fighting, fighters will be taking a Cleveland Clinic Concussion (C3) test. The iPad based app gathers information on reaction time, memory, vision, information processing, and balance. Rather than passing or failing, the test provides a baseline for comparison over time.
The tests will be administered at no charge at the Cleveland Clinic in Las Vegas. The Cleveland Clinic’s Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas is engaged in a years-long study of the effects of brain trauma on boxers and MMA fighters, and has worked in close cooperation withe the NAC. Further, the Vegas-based UFC has donated millions toward to effort.
