The question fighters get asked the most is “who do you want to fight next?” The stock reply is “who ever they want me to, I will fight anyone, and win.” There is a certain nobility to that answer.
But it is not smart.
Smart fighters know who they want to fight, and endeavor to make it happen. This takes the form of reaching out to the match maker, referencing the fight in interviews, and above all, letting it be known on social media. Sometimes the fights are good for the fighter’s career, but not ideal for the fans. Other times, the call out is good for every one.
UFC middleweight Gegard Mousasi recently did a call out on Facebook that is good for all of us.
I respect both Anderson Silva and Michael Bisping a lot as sportsmen, fighters, and people. I enjoy their fights and the times we interacted. But I expect to face one of them for my next fight. It makes sense considering where the MW division is at, the fact we all last fought on the same show, and stylistically any of those match-ups will be beyond exciting.
We are going to do this for the fans. I was a company man and stayed on board when I lost the Bisping fight the 1st time. Now it is time to make the fights that make sense. All the other relevant MW are booked or not available. Bisping, Anderson, and I are all free as we fought on the same night…and we are all ranked similarly. Now is the time!
Dana and Lorenzo, lets make it happen for the fans!!
This is the UFC top 10:
Champion Luke Rockhold
1 Chris Weidman
2 Jacare Souza
3 Vitor Belfort
4 Michael Bisping
5 Lyoto Machida
6 Anderson Silva
7 Tim Kennedy
8 Robert Whittaker
9 Gegard Mousasi
10 Uriah Hall
Michael Bisping and Anderson Silva just fought, with Bisping taking a narrow, gutty decision victory. Bisping is now on a three-fight win streak, with his last loss to current champion Rockhold. He likely needs one more fight before he gets a title shot. If the UFC is looking for a Bisping title shot, they will want to match him with someone ranked a little lower, which would be Mousasi. And the fight would be great.
Like Bisping, Mousasi has won three of his last four. And Mousasi has won performance bonuses in two of his last six fights. A Mousasi vs. Silva fought would be a thrilling clash of striking styles.
What do you say Joe Silva?!
