Mosley: Boxing lack of respect for women fighters an embarrassment
Shane Mosley: “It’s an embarrassment to boxing that UFC and MMA show more respect to their women fighters than the boxing world does.”

Future Boxing Hall of Famer boxer Shane Mosley is promoting a major pay per view, a rematch between himself and Jorge Mayorga on August 29 at the Forum in Los Angeles, Calif. ‘Sugar’ says no women’s title fight has been a part of the undercard at a major men’s PPV boxing match in over a decade, and he aims to end that sad streak.
In light of the strides MMA has taken with Ronda Rousey, Shane Mosley has decided someone in boxing needed to stand up for women in boxing as well. Taking a stand against blatant sexism in boxing, Mosley has announced he has added a title bout between Maureen Shea The Real Million Dollar Baby and Yulihan Avila to the card at Mosley Vs. Mayorga 2.
Mosley’s controversial decision to showcase the two popular and dynamic female fighters marks the first time a women’s title fight has been a part of the undercard at a major men’s PPV boxing match in over a decade.
It’s an embarrassment to boxing that UFC and MMA show more respect to their women fighters than the boxing world does, and it’s about time we caught up, said Mosley. I just hope the community gets behind me in this decision by buying the PPV and coming out to support at the Forum live.
Known as the “Real Million Dollar Baby” because of her work with Hilary Swank in preparation for the hit 2005 movie, Million Dollar Baby, Shea is the current IFBA Jr Featherweight World Champion, current NABA Featherweight Champion, former NABF and former Interim WBC Featherweight Champion. Shea, who is of Irish and Mexican descent, will battle up and coming Mexican boxer Yulihan Avila.
Mosley’s promotion company, GoBox Promotions, will broadcast Mosley v Mayorga 2 live at 10 pm ET/7 pm PT on Pay-Per-View in the USA and Canada with distribution by Integrated Sports via all cable and satellite providers for under $50. In doing so, Mosley is making the fight affordable for the majority of boxing fans, while still being able to recoup his million-dollar investment. Tickets start at $35 and are available through The Forum box office and Ticketmaster.com.
I am ready for war these days and I don’t care what kind of blocks they try and put up: I am making a stand, said Mosley. It’s time somebody stood up and demanded things change. Thankfully I have the name and the funds to do that at Mosley Vs. Mayorga 2.”
Boxing promoter Don King is trying to stop the main event, claiming he holds a contract with Mayorga. Mosley describes the claims as fraudulent.
