“Gangnam Style” is a Korean phrase initially associated with the upscale fashion and lavish lifestyle in Seoul’s Gangnam district. US equivalents would be Beverly Hills for Gangnam strict, and “Swag” for “Gangnam Style.”
The phrase was popularized by the 2012 single “Gangnam Style” by Korean rapper PSY, that was recognized by Guinness World Records this month as the “Most ‘Liked’ Video in YouTube History,” with some 325,000,000 views.
Copycats appeared worldwide, from the North Korean government to United States Naval Academy midshipmen to those Filipino prisoners who did Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Now, Gangnam Style has come to MMA.
Saturday night Brad “One Punch” Pickett took out Yves Jabouin with, yes, one punch. And then he celebrated Gangnam Style in the Octagon.
Pickett however was not MMA’s Gangnam Style pioneer.
That distinct honor falls to a reluctant Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, coaxed into a performance by Ariel Helwani.
A comparison between the two reveals a close competition, with Rampage perhaps holding the edge.
