UFC heavyweight Frank Mir had not lost more than one fight in a row until he lost to Junior dos Santos at UFC 146 on May 26, 2012. Nearly two years later he lost to Alistair Overeem at UFC 169 on February 1, 2014; it was his fourth loss in a row. He was ready to retire, but his wide intervened.

The wife was right – take some time off and heal up the body, said Mir to Matt Erickson for MMAjunkie. After the Alistair fight, I really was thinking about retiring. But she was able to put everything on hold and told me to just relax and work out and go to the gym and not try to get ready for a fight.

Mir went to a yoga class with soccer moms, and had a tough time, indicating there were things he had not been working on.

He returned to the Octagon with a crushing KO of Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva in February. Then Todd Duffee got a little bitter on Twitter.

I call people out, said Mir. You put it out there. At first, I didn’t think anything of it. But one of my buddies said, ‘You hear what Todd’s saying?’ I got a little irritated about some of the disrespectful remarks. So I made sure I called up Joe (Silva) and said I’m more than happy to take this fight.

There’s still a way we can talk to each other and give some kind of credence to someone who’s paid their dues, which after 14 years if anyone’s paid their dues in this organization, I have.

Frank Mir fights Todd Duffee on Wednesday in the main event of UFC Fight Night 71 on Wednesday, live on FOX Sports 1.
