ONE flyweight submission grappling world champion Mikey Musumeci is leaving no stone unturned as he eyes a potential MMA debut.
“Darth Rigatoni” currently has his hands full with an openweight submission grappling match against Japanese MMA legend Shinya Aoki that is set for ONE Fight Night 15 on Prime Video on October 6.
But while speaking to TMZ Sports, the submission ace revealed that he’ll soon be heading abroad to focus on muay Thai as he looks to round out his martial arts skill set.
“(Coach) Gilbert (Burns) wants me to (do MMA) so bad, you know, because Gilbert gave me my (Brazilian jiu-jitsu) black belt. I’m moving to Thailand in September,” Musumeci said.
“I’m going to be there for a few months back and forth from the U.S. and Asia, but I’ll be in Thailand mostly. So, I’m going to have access to the best muay Thai training in the world, right, being in the motherland of muay Thai.”
Famous for his punishing 12-hour training days in the pursuit of excellence in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, the American star has found incredible success in his career. He has won four IBJJF world titles and ONE Championship’s inaugural flyweight submission grappling strap.
Musumeci has yet to fully commit to a switch of disciplines, but if his tireless work ethic and passion for martial arts can yield him an adequate level of skill in “the art of eight limbs,” he says that an MMA debut could likely be in his future.
“Let’s see my progress, I did muay Thai for like seven years as a kid, and I love it. I love muay Thai. I really enjoy learning it – just like jiu-jitsu,” he said.
“So, I’ll just study it and become the best I can at it. Then if I’m ready and I’m decent, f-ck it, let’s do it. I’d love to do MMA. It’d be so cool.”
