On February 29, 2016, pioneering MMA fighter Michael Wayne ‘Mikey’ Burnett was shot three times in the stomach during an attempted robbery while leaving a Tulsa, OK gym. He son leapt on a robber in an attempt to defend his father, and was shot once.
Samantha Vicent has the story for Tulsa World.
Although charged as a youthful offender, a Tulsa teenager was sentenced Thursday as an adult to 35 years in prison after he entered blind guilty pleas to what a judge called the shockingly cruel shootings of a UFC fighter and his son.
Harold Thompson, 17, received 30-year sentences for each of two counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon and attempted robbery with a firearm.
Thompson sentences will be served concurrently, but a five-year term on a fifth conviction — possession of a firearm after juvenile adjudication — will be served after the completion of the 30-year sentence.
Speaking from the bench to Thompson, District Judge William Musseman said the ink wasn’t even dry on a juvenile court judgment and sentence he had received for an unrelated burglary charge four days before the shootings.
Thompson, clad in a navy uniform used for juveniles at the Tulsa Jail, did not give a statement during the hearing but shed tears as Musseman handed down his sentence.
Police alleged Thompson, who was 16 at the time, approached Mikey Burnett in the parking lot and asked to borrow his phone but pulled out a gun and demanded he give him his wallet. Burnett was shot multiple times when he tried to move the gun away from his face, according to an arrest report.
A previous Tulsa World story quotes Mikey Burnett as saying he told Thompson, F*** you. You ain’t getting s*** when Thompson said, Give me your money while pointing the gun at him.
Freddie Burnett, who was standing on the other side of their truck, ran to his father’s aid, which led to a struggle over the gun.
Police said Thompson shot Freddie Burnett in the leg before fleeing on foot and getting into a car with 17-year-old Kywaun Washington, who became his co-defendant in the case. A third person, 31-year-old Otelia Warrior, was charged with attempted robbery on accusations that she drove the getaway car.
Freddie Burnett’s mother, Jennifer Griffith, read a victim impact statement during Thompson’s sentencing in which she said the situation was a traumatic experience that has cost the family tens of thousands of dollars in lost income, as well as hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills.
There were times we weren’t sure if he was gonna make it, Griffith said of Mikey Burnett, calling the injuries both men sustained absolutely horrific.
I would hate for any mother to go through what we experienced, she said.
Griffith told the Tulsa World on Thursday evening that although she is pleased with the resolution, she is bothered by what she sees as Thompson’s lack of remorse.
It’s sad that he threw his life away. But I think (the sentence) is fair considering the fact that four days after his release from juvenile court he did this crime, she said.
Washington pleaded guilty May 23, 2016, to his role in the crime and received three concurrent 10-year sentences under the supervision of the Oklahoma Office of Juvenile Affairs.
Washington and Thompson were initially charged as juveniles before prosecutors amended the case to one that allowed the teens to face adult punishment.
Warrior entered guilty pleas Sept. 21, 2016, to reduced charges of being an accessory to attempted robbery with a firearm. She was sentenced to four years in prison.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help cover some of Burnett’s medical expenses. That page has raised over $26,000 of the $35,000 goal.
Burnett, 41, fought Pat Miletich to determine the first ever UFC welterweight title at UFC 17.5 in 1998. He was a national-class powerlifter, as well as a champion golden gloves boxer and wrestled for three years in college prior to his MMA debut in 1996.
Burnett was a cast member of The Ultimate Fighter 4 in 2006, and injured his neck. He has not fought since, but the former Lion’s Den member founded and ran Mikey’s Gym in East Tulsa for a number of years.
