People first were introduced to Mike Swick on a show called The Ultimate Fighter. At the time, it was considered to be just another reality show, albeit one that Spike TV and the UFC were taking a major risk on. But for the first time, people got an inside look at what it was like to make your way to becoming a fighter in the UFC.
Born in Houston, Texas, Swick has always wanted to be a fighter. In fact, according to him, there was no plan B. After starting in karate at the age of eight years old, Swick never took his mind off achieving his dream – regardless of what others thought. When asked if many people supported his decision of becoming a professional fighter, Swick said, only my mom. Needless to say, without the encouragement of his mother, who knows what he’d be doing today. It’s doubtful he’d be a true contender in one of the toughest divisions in the UFC – not to mention being seen by millions of people on the main card of what promises to be the best UFC event of the year thus far.
Looking at it now, it’s easy to forget the significance that each fighter on that first season of The Ultimate Fighter had in either putting the UFC on the map or possibly ending the hopes of Zuffa to turn this organization into what it is today.
